Sun, sun, sunscreen

Sunscreen is one of the most important things that you can do for your skin, all year round. Sunscreen is readily available as a standalone product, but in some cases, it may already be in the products you use. SPF or sun protection factor is a guideline when determining a products ability to prevent sun damage to the skin. For your information, the lower the SPF, the lower the percentage of the product working in your favor. For example, a product with an SPF 15 only blocks 93% of UVB rays. Therefore, the higher the SPF, the better chance you have at the product protecting your skin. As a reminder, sun damage is one of the leading causes of skin cancer (i.e., basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas.)

Here are a few tips when searching for a sunscreen:

1) Do you want a physical sunblock or a chemical sunblock (and yes, there is a difference)? A physical sunblock is a type of screen where it sits atop the skin and physically blocks the UV rays from being absorbed into the skin. One example of a physical sunblock is zinc oxide. A chemical sunblock is a type of screen where it is absorbed into the skin, and it absorbs the UV rays as well.

2) What are my needs? A physical sunblock is an excellent option for those with skin sensitivities. If you are physically active (i.e., running, swimming, bike riding, etc.), ideally a chemical sunblock is easier to use because of the ability to be absorbed into the skin quickly.

Sunscreen Options

SPF is found in many products, not just standalone sunscreens. It can be found in lip balms, moisturizers and more. My recommendations are as follows:

A. The entire Coppertone Brand line. Coppertone is a leader in the sunscreen product field and for a good reason. They offer a multitude of products from lotions and creams to sprays and lip balms as well as a range of SPF indexes. The entire line offers broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and the products can be found at a variety of retailers. My favorite is the Coppertone Defend & Care. It is lightweight, goes on smoothly and absorbs quickly into the skin.

B. CeraVe Ultra-light moisturizing lotion SPF 30. The product is an oil-free moisturizer that is great for all skin types and recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. It is lightweight and gentle on the skin. It is fragrance-free and super hydrating. This is a great option for everyday use.

Expert in the making

Last week, I had the pleasure of being interviewed as a beauty expert. It was an A-HA moment for me on many levels. In the last five years, I have sacrificed time with my kids and weekends away to build my career, to educate myself on the latest and greatest products and techniques and to network with a group of my peers. I have never considered myself an expert at anything, nonetheless my career. The moment was eye-opening and wonderful albeit a bit overwhelming and nerve-wracking.

I can honestly say that yes, I am rocking this career called makeup artistry. I love it with every ounce of my being. It is fun, challenging and exciting, but it is hard work and long hours that some may not expect. However, I still have so much more to learn and I am willing to put forth the effort to do so. Will there be sacrifices? Possibly. But, can I decide how often they will be? Absolutely.

I love my career and I love that I can help others find their inner beauty, which is the most important aspect of my job (and what makes me love it so much).

With love,

Wow, wow, waterproof!!

Today, I went shopping for some new waterproof eyeliners for my kit. Yes, I buy way too much and spend way too much on makeup. But, I have been looking for the perfect waterproof liner that can be used on the lid as well as the waterline.  I think I found one that I love.

Cargo Cosmetics offers an eyeliner called Swimmables. They come in a variety of colors including Black, Brown, Navy, and Nude. I am so impressed with the longevity of the product. I tested the product on the back of my hand and hours later, the product has not moved.  Wow! I am impressed.  Even better, this product is cruelty-free as well as paraben free.

If you are in the market for a waterproof eyeliner, you need to check it out.  They are also offering a holiday kit where you get (4) full-size liners for $25.00. Don't walk, but run to get yours.

Don't give me lip!

Lip care is so essential to a good beauty routine. In my line of work, dry, chapped lips can make or break a photo. But, it also can be annoying and at times, painful. A few easy ways to keep your lips moisturized is by using lip balm.

Lip balm can come in a tube or a tub and most are less than $5.00. (The price increases when purchasing a multi-pack.) When looking for a good lip balm product, find one that is moisturizing and hydrating for your lips.

One of my favorite brands is Burt's Bees. The products are made with natural ingredients, which I love!  They even offer tinted lip balms for those of us who want to moisturize and add a pop of color. The products can be purchased at many different retailers as well as online. My go-to lip balm is Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Red Dahlia. I love the smell, the color and the way it hydrates. Once you find your favorite, remember to apply it regularly, to keep your lips feeling smooth and looking great.

Go get some today!!
